Well we have completed our 30 hour train ride to Cairns and back and it was very interesting to say the least.
Not as cozy as the Countrylink one but it got us where we needed to go. There were some Aussie men in the back that were the typical American stereotype of what an Aussie man would be like. Very loud, crude with a very thick accent. We could barely understand what they were saying except for the burping, laughing, coughing and gargling. Speaking of, it seems like everyone is sick since the whole ride there has always been at least one person with a phlegm rattling cough or snort.
We did meet a nice guy about 20 years old who just got a job working at the mines but has a month long holiday first and is just traveling around the east coast. He just got back from Airlie beach which is near the whitsunday islands and showed us some pictures. We think we saw a Crocodile as we were crossing this swampy area.
Unfortunately saw a little bit of Roo road kill :( Jeff saw some happily chilling in the shade though!
Up front they have a movie theater where they serve drinks and food and you can sit in little roundabout couches.
Our first night in Cairns we checked into our badass hostel Dreamtime Travellers Rest right across the street from the train station and hung out in the courtyard listening to different peoples accents. The hostel was very quiet yet friendly and open so you feel like you could talk to anyone. It didn't feel that way at the hostel in Byron so it was a nice change!
Spent the next day wandering around and booked out tour to the Great barrier Reef. Spent a little more on that than we had planned but we may not have the opportunity to do that again. Down by the ocean there aren't beaches its actually just a bunch of mud with birds hanging out but they have this sweet "lagoon" in a public park where you can go and swim. So a giant public pool, then a bike path (kind of like the greenbelt) and then the ocean. Pretty sweet! The Saturday market was so rad and they had really cool stuff so I got a cool bracelet and Jeff got a shark tooth necklace. Met two people from California who now live here and were very nice.
While waiting for our bus to Clifton Beach to stay with Carolyn and Jen this guy who was "piss drunk" started chatting with us. As odd as he was it was actually nice talking with him because he gave us a lot of info about the area during the bus ride. We got to Clifton and it was a beautiful place! A bunch of apartments and condos along a road with the ocean right there. There were signs on the beach that crocodiles MAY be present which had me a little freaked out. I just kept Imagining a giant croc shooting out of a wave and grabbing my leg then being taken out to see. I'm sure that happens ALL THE TIME. Just kidding. We had a BBQ at the apartments that night with sausages and kebabs and drank wine and beer out on the balcony :)
We woke up the next morning to the sound of the waves crashing and a bunch of birds making their sounds. One in particular sounded more like a woman screaming murder outside off and on all night. We drove up to Port Douglas first to check out a local market which was pretty sweet! It's hard not to buy everything in sight here sometimes. There were leaves on the ground so it reminded me of fall in Boise. After that we went to a lookout point and then onward to Daintree Rainforest.
We had to drive onto this ferry to cross the Daintree River which was fun thinking about all the crocs swimming around below and the ferry randomly cracking down the middle so all the cars roll in and we all get torn to shreds! But we survived and continued on to this roadside cafe for coffee. We decided not to go for any of the advertised specials for Kangaroo, Emu or Crocodile burgers. Maybe another time. We made it up to Cape Tribulation which is the farthest north you can drive without needing 4WD in the Daintree and walked around on the beaches there. There are signs that say not to swim because of the jellyfish and crocs so we just took photos of the gorgeous scenery and picked up some seashells. Oh, and there are these mysterious birds called Cassowaries that have these helmet looking things on top of their heads that supposedly run around a lot in the rainforest so there were signs everywhere showing a picture of a Cassowary with "next 2 km" under it. Just like you'd see the "deer crossing" signs back at home on the highways. We never did see one though. It felt like Jurassic Park when they're waiting for the TRex.
On the way back down through the rainforest we stopped at Cow Bay and walked around on that beach as well and took a lot of photos. We had homemade ice cream at this little roadside place (chocolate hazelnut and macadamia coconut) and crossed the river on the Ferry again where we booked our Daintree River Croc tour! Out on the boat on the river we saw a big croc sunbathing on the edge of the beach and got up pretty close for photos! ...Sidenote: we posted one of the photos on Facebook with a joking caption that we had camped on a beach and woke up with that croc on the beach near us which caused quite the stir! I spent my 15 minutes of paid Internet left just explaining to everyone who had wrote us that it was a joke. Sorry for the scare!... We also saw a teenage croc poking its eyes and nose out of the water and then found a nest with a bunch of baby crocs! Successful day seeing the Daintree area I muse say. Also, listened a lot to this australian band called Boy and Bear during the drive I'd recommend listening to! Very good stuff.
Yesterday we hopped on a boat to set out for the Great Barrier Reef and Green Island. Our crew was great and they gave us coffee and muffins as we went across the ocean all laying out watching the sky light up. The music was perfect and it felt so good to be out there! I was surprised how far away the reef is from the island when we got there. They tie up to a buoy and we all put on our wet suits, flippers and masks and jumped into the open ocean! I had the same feeling as when I went bungee jumping a long time ago. Scared out of my mind but just didn't let myself think about it and went for it! The wet suits were very buoyant so you just float around with your face in the water looking at the beautiful colorful underwater world beneath. We saw lots of living coral, fish, a sea turtle (my favorite), held a sea cucumber, saw GIANT clams (kind of like the ones in super Mario 64 in the underwater scenes) and reef sharks. The island was pretty small we just walked around the edge looking at all the neat shells and taking photos. They have the 2nd largest croc in captivity in the world on the island which was neat to see but kind of sad how little room it had to live in... The boat ride back we turned off the motor and sailed the whole way which was the scariest part of the experience in my opinion. The boat was tilted so far to one side I was sure that it was going to just go completely over and we would all get slowly eaten by sharks. At some point I relaxed and enjoyed it though and can now say I've been sailing!

All you soul searchin' people, come on!
Time's flyin!
Since we last wrote here we have gone north from Wollongong to Brisbane and explored in between. Before we left we went on a walk on the beach with Carolyn, Jen and their cute dog Lulu. Carolyn and Jen will be in Cairns at the same time we will be there which is pretty awesome since we all want to see the Daintree Rainforest. We are going to hire a car and drive up there for a day trip of exploring.
September 2nd was fathers day in Australia so we got to meet more of the Akhursts as they were over for tea and snacks. September 3rd Hedley drove us to the station to head north to Sydney and then onto a big train for a 12 hour ride to Casino where we took a coach to Byron Bay. I actually didn't really realize we would be on the train for 12 hours until we had started moving already but they're more comfortable than airplanes! Lots of leg room, good views and if nobody sits in front of you the seats swivel around as a foot rest. Within a couple hours I saw my first wild Kangaroos hopping across a hill in the distance. I was super excited and pretty much spent the next 10 hours either sleeping or staring out the window scanning for Roos. We ended up seeing tons more especially as the sun was setting but couldn't manage to get photos or video.
We made it to Byron in the evening and got 2 beers (Stone & Wood) and walked to the Arts Factory Lodge where we had the coolest bungalow thing to stay in! It's down this wooden path in the middle of a bunch of trees. Nothing posh or top stars but funky and definitely one we will remember. We woke up to TONS of random bird noises and managed to record them on the iPad. Seriously it sounds like we are sleeping in the middle of a rainforest or something!
The next day we explored a bit more and since we had spent $10 at the hostel so far they gave us buy one get one free dinner vouchers. We went to use them only to find out the catch was the dinner you had to buy was like $25+. So we walked into town and got 2 large Dominoes pizzas instead and ate it all! Their large was about the size of a small in the US though and it was thin crust so it really wasn't THAT bad :)
Spent all of yesterday at the beach in Byron even though it was very windy. I think that has been my favorite activity since we left Wollongong. I guess I'm supposed to be a beach bum! We used some free wifi in the morning at Travel Bug and ate more pizza later on (just one this time). I got this sweet turtle mood ring in a little town called Nimbin that is just a tad too big that I managed to lose while shaking out our blanket in the park. Of course it had changed to a yellow/green color so it was impossible to see. We spent a pretty good chunk of time scanning the grass on our hands and knees and I had pretty much given up on it since it was starting to get dark and we were looking by flashlight at that point. Jeff kept looking for a while and right as I was telling him to stop and that we should just leave he found it! It was pretty exciting :) What a total badass of a boyfriend, right?
The bus didn't pick us up until 8:00pm to go to Brisbane and it was a pretty uncomfortable ride I have to say. We made it to Brisbane around 10:30pm and got a taxi to our hostel and went right to bed. We have the morning to explore before we hop on a 30 hour train to Cairns!
Music that I've been loving during our traveling:
-Tallest Man on Earth
-Band of Horses
-Ben Howard
-Death Cab for Cutie
-The Head and the Heart
-Nick Drake
-Angus and Julia Stone
-Of Monsters and Men
-Delta Spirit

A pinch and a punch for the first of the month!
The time change is still hard to adjust to but I'm slowly getting there! Every morning I wake up to kookaburra's laughing in the trees outside and other random new bird noises as well. It's kind of nice being up so early as it gives me quiet time to reflect and appreciate everything that is happening. I just wish I could manage to stay up a little later.
The current temperature in the Gong is 42F which is just a little colder than I expected but we are prepared with layers!
Nance and Hed have been the best hosts and we are so thankful for them! Really we have seen so many great things since we have been here and its only been a few days. Every morning we have a breakfast of Wheat Bix and toast with coffee and sit around the table together. Astrid the cat sits in front of the little heater on her mat (I was told she's gotten too close and lit her tail ablaze a few times) and waits for us to finish so she gets her little piece of toast with vegemite. We figure out our plans for the day and get going.
Friday we were dropped off on Mount Keira and hiked down through the jungle-like mountain side and back to the Akhursts house. On the hike we saw mice, a lyrebird, parrots and lots of neat plants. We missed a turn walking back and went a little far out of the way but Hedley came to the rescue right before it started dumping rain and brought us back. Whoops! Nance had beef stew and creamed potatoes cooking when we got back which was pretty perfect :) oh, and the Toohey's too.
Earlier that day we got a prepaid emergency cell phone set up and got Turkish Gozleme which was DELICIOUS! Tim Mendenhall- you'll be impressed I've eaten mushrooms twice here and actually liked the taste.
Saturday morning we picked up Carolyn (the Akhursts daughter) and her dog lulu to go for a coastal walk. The walk is along farmland and ocean cliffs with crashing waves. Apparently it's a great place to whale watch but it was very windy that day so the ocean was a bit choppy. Right at the end of our walk Jeff and his eagle eyes spotted an Emu not too far away grazing which was pretty awesome.
Later on we were picked up by John (the Akhursts son) and went to grab a few schooners of beer at The Figgy Bowl and watched the first half of NRL Wests Tigers vs Melbourne Storm. They call it "footie" here.
Today is Fathers Day in Australia so we are having tea late morning with the Akhursts family and we will see what the rest of the day brings!
So far some of the different forms of expression are:
"give it a go" instead of "try it"
"toilets" instead of "restrooms"
"rubbish" instead of "trash"
"mind the _____" instead of "watch out for the ___"
"good on you" instead of "good job/one"
"how you goin" instead of "how are you doing?"
"cheers" in the place of "have a good day"
"I'm right" instead of "I'm okay/alright"
Tomorrow we head north for Byron Bay, then Brisbane, then Cairns for a few days where we will see the great barrier reef and possibly hire a car with Carolyn and Jen to drive to Daintree Rainforest.
Love to you all!

We made it!
I'm still getting used to this time change as I went to bed around 8:00 pm last night (4:00 am in Boise) and I'm writing this at 4:15 am here (12:15 pm in Boise). I'm sure it'll get easier after a few days!
The travel was long but so worth it! Virgin Australia airline is pretty sweet and the plane was awesome. Every seat had a touch screen on the back with movies to watch and the leg room was spacious enough. We got served breakfast and dinner and adult beverages during dinner but I was so tired I fell asleep after only drinking half of a Victoria Bitter. Thank goodness they gave us earplugs because there was a screaming (and I'm not just talking a newborn wail of a scream, I'm talking blood curdling SCREAM) child about 2 rows ahead of us. That child did NOT want to be on that 15 hour flight!
We arrived around 6:00 am and made it through customs pretty quickly. We got quizzed quite a bit by the guy in customs when he saw we would be there for 4 months and wanted to know how we plan to support ourselves without illegally working. I think he was trying to catch us but Jeff offered to show him our binder of organized goodness and reservations and after flipping through the whole thing he told us we are the most organized backpackers he's ever seen! He did poke fun at me for bringing a bag of rice with me and "not supporting the local economy", haha. I figure if we will be eating it here a lot and I had some at home why not bring it? I guess I'm weird.
Hung out at central station and got a "mother" (energy drink the boys loved last time apparently). We got our train passes taken care of and confirmed and got a calling card to touch base with family. The Akhursts met us at the train station in Wollongong and took us back to their gorgeous house.
Seriously, it's kind of unreal.
They have a great view of Mount Kira and a big backyard with a built in BBQ, a pool and a big spotted gum tree.
Got to Skype briefly with my parents and Nance said "good day mate" which was pretty funny. She told me later to make sure they know she doesn't really say that ;)
I'm still just so overwhelmed with happiness being here and Nance and Hed are the most wonderful people. They made us delicious ham sandwiches for lunch and a BBQ with Toohey's beer for dinner.
We will be here for a few more days before heading north and I'm excited and feeling more energized and rested.
Cheers!

Great Walks
I'm not sure how it started but sometime in the last few years I've gotten this urge/desire to do "great walks" or long hikes. Maybe reading Bill Bryson's "AWalk in the Woods" about hiking the Appalachian Trail got me started. Maybe it was seeing peers write in blogs and post photos about hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. Perhaps an old friend's sister's blog about riding her bike across the U.S. by herself inspired me.
Whatever it was, Jeff and I will be doing multiple "Great Walks" in Australia. What a great way to view some of the places we'll be! Not to mention a cheaper form of accomodation... On average Hostels are $30+ per person per night and that's for a bunk in a room shared with others. Great walks usually have $5 per camp per night and you're in the wilderness!
Here are some of the walks we are doing:
Our official countdown from this moment is 31 days, 20 hours and 39 minutes until our flight leaves and I couldn't be more excited! I still can't believe it's actually happening sometimes and that we've managed to pull it off!
.......And if things ever don't go according to plan I'll refer to a quote from the movie 180 Degrees South... "For me adventure is when everything goes wrong. That is when the adventure starts"

Here are some of the walks we are doing:
Great Ocean Walk
- We will be doing this walk October 2nd - October 9th and there will be 7 different spots we will camp along the way. The hike is 103 km
Fraser Island Walk
- We will be doing this walk from November 8th - November 19th and there are 6 different camp spots. It is an out-and-back type hike so we will stay at some places twice. The walk is 90 km long.
Whitsunday Great Walk
- We will be doing this walk from November 3rd - November 5th and there are 2 different camp spots. The walk is 30 km long.
On another note, we have our trip pretty much planned out and have left some spaces open at the end to either redo some things we enjoyed earlier in the trip or do some of the things we didnt get to do previously if we have enough money still. Tasmania looks BEAUTIFUL but is a little expensive so we'll see if we can pull that off in the end. I may be dreaming but I also think it'd be amazing to make a trip over to New Zealand to see some of the film locations for The Hobbit or LOTR. Of course that's a little chunk of change as well but we'll see what happens!
Here is a link to the blog of the family we will be staying with and helping in Bega Valley a few times throughout the trip. They have built a strawbale house on their land (BEAUTIFUL land I might add) and we are going to help them with landscaping and really anything else they need help with at all. It's one of the things I look forward to most and I love following their blog!
And finally, I made an online calendar we will be updating throughout the trip but it has our itinerary so people can follow along with where we're at if they're ever curious. Here it is.

Purpose
A lot of the choices we make have a purpose or something driving the decision. Lately I've been trying to find exactly what it is that I'm looking forward to most in the upcoming months.
Of course I work at a job that drives me insane on most days but I'm thankful to just have a job and be able to support myself and get to do the things I want to do. So there's that. I want to see the world and live a different lifestyle than I do here for a while. I'm excited to leave my possessions behind and feel what it's like to only have what I can fit in my backpack. I'm hoping to open my eyes a little more and take more photos. I'm hoping to break down my barriers and get out of my shell. To find what it is that holds me back from being outgoing, confident, forgiving and the person I want to be. I want to help other people who need it in whatever way possible. I want to find new music, meet new friends, drive on the wrong side of the road, see nature and all of it's beauty. I want to see new animals, conquer fears and try new food. I want to learn to fish, see different art and be surrounded by different accents :) I want to snorkel in the ocean and feel the sand between my toes. I want to wake up and write in my notebook and take photos in a place I've never been before and may never see again. I want to step out of my comfort zone. I want to get tired from walking and sleep on the ground while I'm young. I want to wake up to the sounds of the ocean and hang my clothes to try on a clothesline tied between trees. I want to mail postcards home and skype with my family. I want to be homesick. I want to experience Christmas with the Akhursts and fireworks over Sydney for NYE. I want to kiss Jeff under those fireworks. I want to see how happy Jeff is while waking up on his birthday IN FREAKING AUSTRALIA. I want to take a boat to a small island to sleep for a few days. I want to walk for days just camping along the way. I want to wash my hair in the ocean and not wear makeup. I want to feel pretty those random times we decide to dress up and go out in random towns. I want to help in Bega valley with a Strawbale House and landscaping and be inspired to do the same here in Idaho someday.
I'm thankful for everything I have here but I sometimes feel as though I take it for granted. I don't appreciate everything as much as I should. I know that also in experiencing all of these new things in another place I will also miss things at home. I'm hoping to develop a better appreciation for how great I have it here. I'll miss my family, my friends and Bear more than anything. I'm sure at points I'll miss my comfortable bed and warm shower.
So of course there is the obvious desire to travel to another country but deep down there are so many reasons why we are risking so much to go. It just feels like the perfect time to do it and I can only hope to come back a better person. Nobody is perfect and maybe I won't change but I really hope to see things from a better perspective and appreciate life more.
There are a variety of activities and accommodation booked already and reserved and here are some of the things we'll be doing and places we'll be staying...
Blackmore's Sydney Marathon
Great Ocean Walk
Hostel in Cairns
Hostel in Alice Springs (before seeing Ayer's Rock)
Camping space at Ayer's Rock Resort
Irish Hotel above a bar in Sydney (staying during the marathon)
Nimbin - Rainbow Retreat (really interesting "rooms")

Feeling accomplished!
Well 2012's Sasquatch Music Festival is done and over with and of course like every other year it was the time of our lives! Amazing music, beautiful scenery, great friends and new memories. We met up with our Canadian friends that were our neighbors last year so we could camp together again and met some new friends to add to our crew. Can't wait for next year!
Now that Australia is the next "vacation" we go on the planning is in full force again and we have accomplished quite a bit this last week! We've got 2 new backpacks on the way (bigger, better quality and lighter) as well as a new lightweight sleeping bag for me, 2 lightweight camp stove burners and a trek towel (kind of like a shazaam towel that is light but soaks up a lot of water). I bought us some biodegradable camp soap for while we're out and about, traded some clothes I didn't want anymore at a clothing swap in the park for a few lightweight tops PERFECT for the trip and made another purchase maybe only females would care about but actually provides a lot of relief for something that could have been a lot more of a hassle a few times throughout the trip. If you're really curious about a greener/hassle free way to deal with "Aunt flow" click here but you have been warned. I only include this personal info for anyone who may benefit as I did not really know anything about this product until searching for information and have heard nothing but great things about it.
On a different note, planning our trip to Ayer's rock is a little frustrating only because of the cost. There is no "cheap" way to get there unless you want to hitch hike. So renting a car will have to be the way we go! That trip alone (basically done in 48 hours) will cost us ~$600 or more. But who could miss this?
84 days and 14 hours until we leave for Australia
80 days and 19 hours until we're done with work :)
